The
Bermuda Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is pleased to announce that Miss
Eleanor Gardner has been selected as Bermuda's Rhodes Scholar 2013. Eleanor is
the daughter of John and Judith Gardner of Smith's Parish, Bermuda.
Eleanor attended Bermuda High School and graduated in 2009 with an impressive
array of GCSEs and her International Baccalaureate Diploma. While at Bermuda
High School, Eleanor was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award from the
Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Doris Trott Butterfield Scholarship.
During high school she participated in the Bermuda Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and
earned silver and bronze awards. She also served as Deputy Head Girl at Bermuda
High School.
Eleanor is currently attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland
where she is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a
Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Eleanor expects to graduate in May, 2013.
Eleanor has been on the Dean's List for 3 out of 6 semesters and has been the
holder of the Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship and the Bank of
Bermuda Foundation Sir Henry Tucker Education Grant. While at Johns Hopkins,
Eleanor did a term study abroad with the SIT Switzerland: International Studies
and Multilateral Diplomacy Program in Geneva.
At Johns Hopkins, Eleanor served as Associate and then Executive Director of the
Foreign Affairs Symposium, an annual Spring speaker series, whose events seek to
encourage critical dialogue within the university community on important current
social, political and economic issues.
Eleanor is well known in sailing and swimming circles in Bermuda. She has
represented Bermuda in local and international sailing regattas. Eleanor is also
a competitive swimmer and was a member of the Bermuda National Swim team
competing in local and international meets. Eleanor has continued swimming
competitively at Johns Hopkins and has been a member of the women's varsity
team, which competes with other US universities and at the NCAA Swimming &
Diving Division III Championships. Currently in her senior year, Eleanor is a
captain of the Women's Varsity Swimming Team.
In August 2008, Eleanor was nominated by the Bermuda Sailing Association and the
Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association, and then selected by the Bermuda Olympic
Association, to be Bermuda's Female Ambassador for the Olympic Youth Camp
Cultural Exchange Programme in Beijing, China.
Eleanor was an animal care volunteer at the SPCA from 2004-2007
and a Youth Net Mentor in Bermuda for the academic school year 2007-2008. More
recently in Baltimore, as part of the swim team, she participated in community
service initiatives each year, including volunteering at the annual Charles
Village Fair, cleaning up the grounds of a local high school in Baltimore, and
participating in the annual Baltimore Swim Across America event. In 2012,
she organized the Swim Across America College Fun Relay Event with one of
the event officials and her team won the award for being the top college fund
raising team.
Eleanor plans to read for a MSc in Comparative Social Policy at Hertford
College, Oxford.
