The Bermuda Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is pleased to announce that Ms Isabelle Stone has been selected as Bermuda's Rhodes Scholar 2019. Isabelle is the daughter of Ian and Michelle Stone of Paget Parish, Bermuda.
Isabelle attended Bermuda High School between 2004 and 2014 where she completed her IGCSEs and International Baccalaureate. She won the High School's IGCSE Physics prize in 2012.
In 2014, Isabelle entered Boston College in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Boston College in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and minors in Philosophy and Faith, Peace and Justice, Magna Cum Laude. She was also elected Phi Beta Kappa at Boston College for high academic achievement. Isabelle was on the Dean's List throughout most of her time at Boston College and received other academic awards and distinctions, including Alpha Sigma Nu for academic scholarship and Omicron Delta Honor Society for outstanding achievement in Economics.
In 2017, while at Boston College, Isabelle attended Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain where she studied Economics, Spanish and Human Rights.
After graduating from university, Isabelle joined Nephila Capital in Bermuda where she has been engaged in research on global renewable energy projects.
Isabelle has a keen interest in politics. She was a panelist for a discussion based on the US presidential elections and race relations. She was a member of Americans for Informed Democracy, an organization promoting non-partisan political education, where she discussed and debated current political matters. She was also a team member organizing a Model United Nations conference. In her spare time, Isabelle presented a weekly radio show in Boston which focused on highlighting local and under-represented talent.
Isabelle was nominated for a Bermuda Outstanding Teen in Leadership award in 2014 for her work in the formation and operation of Operation Smile, a Bermuda-based charity that provides a safe haven for Bermudian children with autism and other special needs. She is also a volunteer at Grateful Bread in Bermuda which provides food, school supplies, toiletries, storage containers and clothes for the needy.
During her time in Boston, Isabelle was a volunteer at the Casa Nueva Vida Homeless Shelter where she helped tutor homeless children and provided assistance in teaching, homework, sports activities and general childcare. She designed and implemented an incentive program for the children to promote good educational habits. She also volunteered in Boston College's Best Buddies program to give guidance to children with intellectual and development disabilities and visited her "buddy" regularly to work on her personal and career development. She participated in the executive board meetings to assist in the instruction of new members.
While at Boston College, Isabelle participated in intramural sports, including volleyball, flag football and basketball.
Isabelle plans to read for the MPhil Economics at New College.
