Bermuda Rhodes Scholarship

The Bermuda Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is pleased to announce that Mr Nicholas Barton has been selected as Bermuda's Rhodes Scholar 2016. Nicholas is the son of Beverley and Stephen Barton of Smith's Parish, Bermuda.

Nicholas attended Saltus Grammar School and graduated in 2012 as Head Boy. While at Saltus, Nicholas achieved 11 GCSEs and 8 Advanced Placements and won numerous awards, including the subject prizes in six subjects, the SGY Attainment Award for outstanding scholarship, the SGY Science Award, the BELCO Mathematics Award, and the Peter Wittich Award. He was also awarded the SGY University Scholarship for overall contribution to School life.

After Saltus, Nicholas entered Princeton University in New Jersey, USA and graduated with Honours in June 2016 with a Bachelor's Degree in Astrophysical Sciences. While at Princeton, Nicholas held both the Nicholl Scholarship and the Fesseden-Trott Scholarship, awarded for scholastic and academic ability, and was elected to the Sigma Xi Research Society.

In 2016, Nicholas started at Imperial College, London where he is studying computational mathematics and numerical analysis. He expects to graduate in September 2017 with an MSc in Applied Mathematics.

Nicholas is a keen squash player and was a member of Bermuda’s Junior National Team. He was also a squash coach at the Bermuda Squash Rackets Association annual summer camps. While at Princeton, Nicholas was a member of the Men's Varsity Squash Team which were the Ivy League Champions in 2013 and the Hoehn Cup Champions in 2014 and 2015, and he was selected for the George McFarland ’81 award for enthusiasm, ability, sportsmanship and leadership.

The outdoors has always been a passion for Nicholas. At Princeton he was a member of Outdoor Action and the Co-Chair of its Leader Training Committee, where he developed and taught leadership and group dynamics courses. He achieved the Silver Award in the Duke of Edinburgh programme and in 2014 spent a summer wilderness backpacking in Alaska while studying leadership and experiential education with the National Outdoor Leadership School.

In his free time in Bermuda, Nicholas has enjoyed volunteering with the 19th Bermuda Cub Scouts and has been recognised by the Bermuda Centre of Philanthropy for his work with Keep Bermuda Beautiful.

Nicholas plans to read for the MSc in Mathematical Modelling & Scientific Computing at University College.
