The
Bermuda Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is pleased to announce that Mr
Rowan Border has been selected as Bermuda's Rhodes Scholar 2015. Rowan is the
son of Karen and Alistair Border of Warwick Parish, Bermuda and grandson of
David and Elizabeth Wingate.
Rowan attended Gilbert Institute for his
primary school, then moved to Saltus Grammar School where he graduated in 2008
with top results in his GCSEs. At Saltus, he won the Headmaster's Award for GCSE
Excellence in the same year.
Next, Rowan went to Sevenoaks School in the
United Kingdom and in 2010 obtained his International Baccalaureate. While at
Sevenoaks, he was a senior prefect and won the Sevenoaks Creative Award for
developing the yearbook website.
Rowan entered the University of
Edinburgh in 2011 to study for a BSc in Computer Science and Artificial
Intelligence. He was the holder of the XL Scholarship to attend the University
of Edinburgh and, in 2014, won the Marks & Clerk Prize for Innovation for a
robotics project.
In 2013 with a group of friends, Rowan started a 3-D
printing company which was selected by the Scottish Institute for Enterprise to
represent Scotland at the Global Founders' Skills Accelerator programme at MIT
in Boston.
Rowan rode for 10 years with Bermuda Riding for the Disabled.
He is also a qualified skydiver and a keen recreational sailor.
He
was a senior member of the Bermuda Boys Brigade and introduced younger members
to technology based activities. On many occasions, he has volunteered his
technical skills in community projects to help them to take full advantage of
technology.
Rowan plans to read for a DPhil at the Centre for Doctoral
Training in Autonomous Intelligent Machines & Systems with the Department of
Engineering Science and the Department of Computer Science at Lincoln College,
Oxford.
